പ്രവർത്തനം പ്രൊഫസർ Myron Danus നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ഈ വർഷം ഫെബ്രുവരി 10 ന് എടുത്ത.

World’s First Head Transplant A Success After Nineteen Hour Operation
Johannesburg, South Africa — A 36-year-old man has undergone the world’s first successful head transplant. The ground-breaking operation took a team of surgeons nineteen hours to complete and has allowed the patient to be cancer-free.

Paul Horner, who was diagnosed with bone cancer five years ago, was on the verge of death when he was approved for the controversial and possibly deadly operation.
Doctor Tom Downey, who was part of the South African team who carried out the operation, told CNN he is thrilled about the results.
“It’s a massive breakthrough,” Downey said. “We’ve proved that it can be done – we can give someone a brand new body that is just as good, or better, than their previous one. The success of this operation leads to infinite possibilities.”
Surgeons at Charlotte Maxexe Johannesburg Academic Hospital in Johannesburg carried out the operation in February but waited until they could confirm it was successful before they made any public statement.
Downey spoke to reporters about the complexity behind the first ever head transplant.
“This procedure is another excellent example of how medical research, technical know-how and patient-centered care can be combined in the quest to relieve human suffering.”
The operation was led by Professor Myron Danus and took place on February 10th of this year.
“Our goal is for Horner to be fully functional in two years and so far we are very pleased by his rapid recovery,” said Danus. “Before the operation, Horner’s body was riddled with cancer and he had less than a month to live. We were fortunate enough to find a donor body; a 21-year-old man who has been brain dead from a serious car accident that happened in 2012. The boys body worked just fine, but his brain was not functioning whatsoever, and there was absolutely no chance of recovery.” Danus continued, “We received approval from the young man’s parents to use their sons body to do the operation. They were extremely happy their son could save a life even in the vegetated state that he was in.”
Doctors say Horner has made an 85% recovery; walking, talking and doing the normal things a healthy individual does.
The Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, nicknamed Joburg Gen is an accredited general hospital in Parktown, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. It has 1,088 beds. The hospital’s professional and support staff exceeds 4,000 people.
Even though Horner lives in the United States, the first-of-its-kind operation had to be done overseas in a location where the medical guidelines are not as strict.

FInally Gene Therapy Drug is for sale
Glybera, a treatment for the rare genetic condition lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD), which clogs the blood with fat, has been developed by Dutch biotech firm UniQure and Italian marketing marketing partner Chiesi. It is undergoing an assessment of benefits by Germany’s federal joint committee, which will report by April 2015.
But the company is seeking a retail price of €53,000 (£42,000) per phial, which equates to €1.1m (£870,000) for a course of treatment for a typical LPLD patient. This price will be subject to a discount under Germany’s drug pricing system.
A Chiesi spokeswoman confirmed the launch price and added that a final figure would be set after the German authorities gave their verdict and negotiations are held with health insurance funds. “First commercial treatments are expected in the first half of 2015,” she said.
UniQure, which will get a net royalty of between 23% and 30% on sales, said EU pricing was a matter for its Italian partner, although the Dutch firm does plan to discuss Glybera pricing during an investor meeting in New York next month.
With only 150 to 200 patients likely to be eligible for Glybera across Europe, the impact on healthcare budgets will be small, even at a very high price – but this case will be watched closely as a benchmark for future gene therapies.
UniQure also has plans to seek approval for Glybera in the United States, which it hopes to get in 2018.
Although there is already a gene therapy for cancer on the market in China, that has not been rolled out to other countries, making Glybera a first for the west.
Proponents of the gene-fixing technology insist it stacks up as a cost-effective treatment, despite the high cost, as it could permanently cure many patients.
In the case of Glybera, Chiesi said the annualised cost was no more than that charged for some expensive enzyme replacement therapies.
UniQure is also working on gene treatments for haemophilia and has an early-stage project in heart failure.
Assuming trials are successful, analysts expect gene medicines treating more common conditions to cost less, as manufacturers should be able to recoup their research and development investment from a larger patient group.
Rivals in the gene therapy market include privately-owned Spark Therapeutics, which has an eye drug in late-stage clinical tests, and Bluebird Bio, which is working on drugs for neurological and blood disorders.
Bluebird Bio and UniQure both staged successful floats on the Nasdaq market in the past 18 months, reflecting growing investor interest in the field. Among major pharmaceutical companies, Bayer struck a gene therapy deal with Dimension Therapeutics in June, while Novartis recently established a new cell and gene therapies unit, and Sanofi has a long-standing tie-up with Oxford BioMedic.

Vijay to be felicitated at Madurai
Vijay adjudged the next ‘Superstar of Kollywood’ through a survey held by popular Tamil weekly Kumudam is all set to be felicitated by the magazine at Madurai where he will be awarded with the much-coveted title ‘Superstar’ in a glitzy event which will see the attendance of celebrities from the tinsel world.
The grand event is speculated to be held on Independence Day, August 15 at Madurai. However, official confirmation is still awaited.

ജഗതി ശ്രീകുമാര് - കൊച്ചിന് ഹനീഫയുടെ ചിത്രം റിലീസിനൊരുങ്ങുന്നു
കൊച്ചിന് ഹനീഫയയും ജഗതി ശ്രീകുമാറുമൊക്കെ വീണ്ടും വെള്ളിത്തിരയില് ചിരി പടര്ത്താന് എത്തിയിരുന്നെങ്കില് എന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിയ്ക്കാത്ത പ്രേക്ഷകരില്ല. മരണം കവര്ന്നെടുത്തതിനാല് കൊച്ചിന് ഹനീഫയുടെ തിരിച്ച് വരവ് സാധ്യമല്ല. എന്നാല് ഈ രണ്ട് താരങ്ങളുടെയും ആരാധകര്ക്ക് ഒരു സന്തോഷവാര്ത്ത. കൊച്ചിന് ഹനീഫയും ജഗതിയും ഒന്നിച്ചഭിനയിച്ച '3 വിക്കറ്റിന് 365 റണ്സ്' എന്ന ചിത്രം റിലീസിനൊരുങ്ങുന്നു. ഈ ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് നടക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് ജഗതി അപകടത്തില് പെടുന്നത്. അഞ്ച് വേഷങ്ങളിലാണ് ജഗതി ചിത്രത്തില് അഭിനയിച്ചിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. കെകെ ഹരിദാസാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ സംവിധായകന്. കൊച്ചിന് ഹനീഫയുടെ മരണത്തിന് ശേഷം വര്ഷങ്ങള് കഴിഞ്ഞ് റിലീസ് ചെയ്യുന്ന ഹനീഫ ചിത്രമെന്ന പ്രത്യേകതയും 3വിക്കറ്റിന് 365 റണ്സിനുണ്ട്. ഒരാളപ്പോലെ ഏഴുപേരുണ്ടെന്നാണലല്ലോ കരുതുന്നത്. എന്നാല് ഇവരെല്ലാം ഒരു നഗരത്തില് തന്നെ എത്തിപ്പെട്ടാലോ. അത്തരമൊരു അവസ്ഥയാണ് ചിത്രം വരച്ച് കാട്ടുന്നത്. സര്ക്കിള് ഇന്സ്പെക്ടര്, പാസ്റ്റര്, പോക്കറ്റടിക്കാരനായ ഭൈരവന്, റിയല് എസ്റ്റേറ്റ് ബിസിനസുകാരനായ മാര്ത്താണ്ഡന്, ബാലെ നര്ത്തകനായ പത്മദളാക്ഷന് എന്നിങ്ങനെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളാണ് ജഗതി ചിത്രത്തില് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്.
